Sri Lankan Bridal Jewellery: Kandyan, Tamil and Catholic Traditions

Traditional Sri Lankan 22K gold bridal necklace set with earrings and bangles on red silk

Bridal jewellery in Sri Lanka is not one tradition but several. A Kandyan bride, a Tamil bride and a Catholic bride in Negombo may all wear 22K gold, but the pieces, their meaning and the way they are worn are different. This guide explains the main traditions so you can choose a set that honours your family’s customs and still feels like you.

Why 22K gold for bridal jewellery

22K gold, stamped 916, is the standard for Sri Lankan bridal jewellery. It has the deep yellow colour that suits traditional dress, and because it is 91.6% pure gold, it holds its value. Bridal gold is often passed down or exchanged years later, so purity matters as much as design.

The Kandyan bride

The Kandyan bridal look comes from the royal court of the Kandyan kingdom, and it is the most elaborate of the Sri Lankan traditions.

  • Layered necklaces. The signature of the Kandyan bride is a stack of necklaces of increasing length, traditionally up to seven, from a short choker to a long chain reaching the waist.
  • Nalalpata. An ornament worn across the forehead and hairline, often with a central pendant.
  • Earrings and ear chains that connect to the hair, framing the face.
  • Bangles, armlets and a waist chain, completing the outfit with the Osariya saree.

Kandyan motifs, such as lotus petals, scrollwork and the liyawela vine, appear across these pieces. Today many brides choose a lighter version of the full set, for example three or four necklaces instead of seven, so it is comfortable to wear for the whole day.

The Tamil bride

For Tamil Hindu weddings, the most important piece is the thaali, the sacred pendant the groom ties around the bride’s neck during the ceremony. It is usually hung on a heavy gold chain called the thaali kodi, and its design often reflects the family’s community and deity.

  • The thaali and chain, often worn for life.
  • Long and short necklaces, such as a choker with a longer haaram necklace.
  • A nethi chutti on the forehead and ornaments for the hair.
  • Bangles in sets, worn on both wrists.

Because the thaali carries religious meaning, families often have specific requirements for its shape and symbols. Bring a reference or a family piece when you order.

The Catholic bride in Negombo

Negombo’s large Catholic community brings its own traditions. Church weddings centre on the exchange of wedding rings, so the bands are the most important pieces. Many brides also wear:

  • A single statement necklace and matching earrings in 22K gold with a white bridal dress, or a fuller set with a saree for the homecoming.
  • A cross pendant, sometimes a gift from parents or godparents.
  • Matching bangles for the reception or homecoming.

Tamil Catholic families in Negombo may also include a thaali in the ceremony, so it is worth checking family custom before you order.

Modern bridal jewellery

More brides now mix traditions or choose a lighter “semi-heavy” set they can wear again after the wedding. Popular choices include a single detailed necklace instead of a full stack, earrings that work for other events, and a few pieces set with Ceylon sapphires for colour. Made-to-order jewellery makes this easy, because each piece can be sized, weighted and designed for the bride.

How to choose your bridal set

  1. Start with the ceremony. List the pieces your tradition requires before adding anything else.
  2. Set a budget in grams. Gold rates change daily, so decide how much gold you want for each piece. Our price guide explains how weight, making charges and stones add up.
  3. Match the outfit. Necklace lengths depend on the neckline of the blouse or dress.
  4. Think about after the wedding. Pieces you will wear again are better value than pieces that stay in a box.
  5. Check purity and weight. Every bridal piece should be 916 certified, with its gold weight stated.
