How to read the gold rate
Per gram is the price of one gram of raw gold at that purity. Per pawn is the price of 8 grams, the traditional unit still used across Sri Lanka. 22K, stamped 916, is the standard for Sri Lankan jewellery; 24K is used for coins and bars.
Why a jewellery bill is higher than the gold rate
The gold rate is for raw metal. A finished piece also includes making and wastage charges for the craftsmanship, and the value of any stones. Use the calculator above with a making percentage to estimate a piece, or see the full breakdown on any product in our 22K collection.
Where our rate comes from
Our rate starts from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka reference gold price, which follows the international gold price and the US dollar exchange rate. Because jewellers in Sri Lanka trade at the Colombo Sea Street market rate, which carries a local premium over that reference, we measure the day's market premium and apply it, so our prices track the Sea Street market. The rate is checked twice a day.
What moves the gold rate
- The world gold price, set in US dollars per ounce.
- The rupee exchange rate. A weaker rupee pushes local gold prices up even when world prices are flat.
- Local demand, which rises around Avurudu, Deepavali, Christmas and the wedding seasons.
